Make mindfulness your superpower

The power of mindfulness: the secret is out

On a previous episode of the show, I said, “If you’re meditating and practicing mindfulness, you’ve got the superpower of focused attention.”

It looks like I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Today, I came across an entertaining and informative animation on YouTube – Why Mindfulness is a Superpower.

It’s just a couple of minutes long, but it covers mindfulness pretty well.

I’ve been to a few conferences over the past few months and I was paying attention… to how distracted most people are.

Some of the attendees at these conferences paid hundreds of dollars to attend so they could get better at what they do for a living. Yet, during every presentation, I saw most people checking their phones or surfing the Internet or checking emails.

So many wasted opportunities for growth. It was really sad to watch.

We could keep this mindfulness-as-a-productivity-superpower a secret and use it to gain a huge advantage over the distracted masses.

But we won’t.

Because, as the late Benjamin Parker once told the future Spiderman, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Curious about cryptocurrency? There’s a new podcast for that

The Crypto Cousins podcast - about cryptocurrency

The Crypto Cousins podcast

I don’t want to sound too dramatic here, but… two men have done more to change my life than anyone. And now, those two have teamed up to start a new podcast about cryptocurrency.

I hope this doesn’t come off sounding too much like a commercial, but here goes…

Gary Leland and Tony Cecala are launching the Crypto Cousins podcast.

I’ve been talking to both of them about their new show and, I have to tell you, I’m really excited.

I’m excited for them because I think this show is going to be big. And I’m excited about the opportunities in cryptocurrency.

I can’t promise or guarantee results if you invest in cryptocurrencies. This is definitely a “buyer beware” situation.

But, I believe, this is a great time to get into the game.

Cryptocurrency is still a wide-open opportunity. It’s going to shake up our world.

I realize that many of you have heard of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Some of you may have dismissed it while others might be a little unclear about exactly what it is.

Well, this podcast is for you. This is your chance to learn about and get into the cryptocurrency game while it’s still in its infancy.

They have a Facebook group and Facebook  page for the show. I recommend you Like the page and Join the group so you don’t miss out.

And, when their podcast launches soon, be sure and subscribe to the show.

I can’t predict the future, but I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Two simple magic words: thank you

Tiki Kona pen from Retro 1951

I got my Tiki pen. Now what?

“Thank you!”

I’ll bet you learned to say this before you could even read or write.

And, sometimes, we forget to say it.

I forgot to say it.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to the Dallas Pen Show. If you’re into fountain pens and writing instruments, this is your kind of show.

I’m a fountain pen fan, so off I went.

I was really hoping to find my “Holy Grail” pen:  the Retro 51 Tornado Popper Limited Edition Tiki Kona Rollerball Pen.

I’m also a tiki enthusiast, so this pen was checking off a couple of boxes for me.

Unfortunately, this limited edition pen was sold out long before the pen show.

But a man can dream, and this man had a dream he would find the tiki pen at the show.

My first destination at the pen show was the Retro 1951 table. Would they have the pen of my dreams?

A dream denied?

Nope. Retro 1951 didn’t have any left. They all went to retailers.

However, someone at the company (sadly, I did not get his name) chased down someone at the show who might have one.

Retro 1951 introduced me to Michael Dromgoole of Dromgoole’s Fine Writing and Stationary. Michael gave me his cell number and told me to call him Monday morning and he’d see what he could do.

Monday could not arrive fast enough. I called Michael at 8:30 am sharp and asked about the tiki pen.

“How many would you like?”, he asked.

I bought one. I didn’t want to deny another pen and tiki enthusiast from getting their own pen.

A couple of days later, the pen showed up on my doorstep and I’m a happy man.

Much later, I remembered that I forgot to thank Retro 1951 and Michael.

So, this morning, I sent an email to both and thanked them for helping me with the pen.

And I want to thank them again here, on this show.

Thank you, Retro 1951. And thank you, Michael. I’ll be doing business again with you in the future.

Do you know someone you should be saying “thank you” to? Then, why not tell them right now?

You make the world a little bit better each time you use those magic words.

Change the world one podcast at a time

the world

We can do it

I want you to listen to me very carefully. We are going to change the world.

So, here’s what I need you to do:

Go out into the world – it doesn’t matter where – and find some interesting people.

They’re out there. Trust me on this, they’re everywhere. Maybe even next door.

Next, I want you to talk to them. As a matter of fact, why don’t you interview them?

Today, while I was out visiting a local business, I noticed a guy sitting at a table with a nice camera. He and his girlfriend were busy editing pictures on his laptop.

YooHoo!

His name is Jesse Hernandez. She is Lindsay McCoy.

Two very interesting people who are starting a photography business – YooHoo Photo.

You should absolutely check out their website. And, if you’re in the area and are looking for a photographer, you’ve found one!

Jesse is a talented photographer with a unique and artistic eye. His pictures don’t look like the typical photographer’s. And you know how sometimes, you can just tell someone is going to be successful?

Jesse and Lindsay are incredibly nice people, too.  They helped make my day a lot more awesome.

So, like I said, go out there, meet interesting people, interview them and then…

Start a podcast. Share these stories on your show.

It’s so simple: if more people go out and meet other people, create podcasts, and tell these stories, more people will listen to podcasts.

Once that happens, we can change the world. We can make the world a little better.

One podcast at a time.

Going mobile – get out there and touch the world

going mobile

Get out of the house for a better life

Ever since I started getting out of the house, things have gotten a lot more interesting.

One way I can get more done while being out and about is by “going mobile”.

I mentioned this yesterday, but I often stop at coffee shops after work instead of heading straight home. I’ve started using a Chromebook laptop for these stops and it’s working out pretty well.

The Chromebook solution

The Chromebook is an inexpensive laptop that runs the Chrome browser as its operating system. Mine has 4 GB of RAM and it’s pretty fast.

Most of the work I need to do on the computer, I can do on the Chromebook. For example,  I can use Evernote on the web for writing.

However, there is some software I have loaded on my Mac that I can’t replace with websites and apps on the Chromebook. Luckily, I discovered the FREE Chrome Remote Desktop plugin.

This plugin lets me access my Mac remotely using the Chromebook.

And, if my Chromebook is lost, stolen, or destroyed, it’s not the end of the world. Nothing is saved locally on the laptop and it isn’t crazy expensive, like the Mac.

However, I do regret that I didn’t buy the 14-inch version.

This is the 14-inch version (affiliate link).

I really enjoy going out more each evening. I’m getting my other work done and I get to meet some interesting people and discover some interesting new places.

So, my simple advice for changing your life is, get out of the house.

Shake up your routine for better performance

performance

Try caffeinating your performance

Are you stuck in a creative rut? Are you looking for a way to get motivated and get more done?

Recently, I realized it was time to work on my productivity and performance. So, I decided to shake things up and change up my daily routine.

Now, instead of going straight home from work, I’ll usually head to a coffee shop to do some writing or work on the podcast.

Maybe it’s the coffee, but I feel a lot more energized than if I did this at home.

And you never know who you might meet at a coffee shop.

My creative kit

I’m experimenting with the process. I recently bought an inexpensive Chromebook laptop (affiliate link) for these coffee shop excursions, so I’m leaving the MacBook Pro at home.

Every morning, I toss the Chromebook, some notebooks, and several gel pens into my canvas bag and head out the door.

This keeps things simple. The Chromebook runs for about ten hours when it’s fully charged, so I don’t have to worry about finding an outlet.

I can use the laptop to write show notes in WordPress for the podcast. If I want to do some writing or capture ideas, I can use Evernote in the browser. All the basic formatting I need for writing is right there. Easy.

Some days, I go analog and use one or two pens and one of the notebooks. I find it easier to do creative writing with pen and paper than a computer. And no electricity or wifi is required.

Bottom line, this simple change-up in my daily routine has helped me reset and re-engage with the creative process.

Why not try it and let me know if it works for you?

Get back to work – deep work

work

Is your work getting you where you want to go?

I’ve been pretty mindful for the last few months and I’m getting a lot done. However, I’m not really making much progress with my side hustle.

Yesterday on the show, I mentioned I hadn’t sold a shirt on Merch by Amazon – not a single one – after two months.

I got some great feedback yesterday on why my shirts aren’t selling. It’s up to me to take that feedback and get to work.

I remember being a lot more focused and productive right after I read Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (affiliate link).

Cal Newport, a productivity superstar, wrote this amazing book.

This really makes me question whether I’m really being productive if I’m not achieving my side-hustle goal.

I read the book back in March. Maybe it’s time I look it over again to get back on track.

If you’re looking for a big productivity boost, I can’t recommend Deep Work enough.

But, don’t just read it. You’ve got to work it!

My mindfulness status report

status report

Status report! Status report!

It’s been a while since I’ve given you an update on my online business.

Making money online is hard – for Mitch.

I have five shirts for sale on Amazon using their Merch program. So far, after two months, I still haven’t sold a single shirt.

No one seems to want my adorable Yorkie shirt or my hilarious jetpack shirt or my clever meditation shirt.

But, help is on the way thanks to my friend Lisa Irby of Passive Shirt Profits.

Lisa is killing it. Last month, she sold nearly 1,000 shirts on Merch.

Of course, I’m going to listen to Lisa’s advice.

Here’s what she had to say about my listings:

“The #1 thing almost EVERYONE is doing who has emailed me is going way too broad and there’s too much competition in the keywords they are targeting. But I like the concept. I think it’s just too much competition.”

She’s right, of course. She did an Amazon search on the keywords for one of my shirts and got 180 pages of results. And she got over 80 pages of search results for another.

By the way, if you want to learn more about Merch, you really need to check out Lisa’s website at passiveshirtprofits.com.

She also advises:

“Combining two niches/topics can be a gold mine if you get the right combo.”

Clearly, I have some work to do. Once I get this show edited and scheduled, I’ll get right on it.

Time to apply the Meditate with Mitch Mindfulness Mind Trick!

I’ll give you an update when conditions warrant. Hopefully, soon!

The future is coming whether you like it or not

the future

There’s no stopping the future (or you)

Are you looking forward to the future or dreading it?

If you watch a lot of science fiction movies, you may have noticed a trend: lots of depressing stories set in a dystopian future.

I’m not saying these movies or stories are bad, but I just don’t see the future as being so bleak.

I read a technology story today that asks if you’re a “techno-optimist” or “techno-pessimist”.

Put me in the optimist column.

If you aren’t optimistic about the future, what’s the point? Of anything?

If you’ve been practicing mindfulness and paying attention, you may have noticed you’re the one driving your reality. You get to decide if you’re having a good day or a bad day.

You get to decide whether you’re moving forward with your life or standing still.

And you get to decide if you’re going to look ahead with wonder or alarm.

Tomorrow, you get to start over. The same goes for the tomorrow after that and the tomorrow after that.

Meditation and mindfulness practices won’t fix everything or make things perfect. But, they can give you the fuel you need to move ahead to your next adventure.

And, you get to pick that next adventure.

Choose wisely.

Podcasters: study what the successful shows are doing

study

Copycats, thieves, and podcasters

Here it is, part six of my six-part series for creating a better podcast to compete with the really popular shows.

Tip number six: study the great podcasts.

This one is pretty simple and obvious. But, how many of us take the time and effort to really study what the successful podcasters are doing?

Don’t just listen – take notes. Try and analyze how these shows are written, structured, and edited. Think about how you can use these same techniques in your show.

I realize many of the popular podcasts utilize a production team, but that doesn’t mean you can’t figure out ways to bring the same production values to your show.

I mentioned this earlier, but one way to improve your show is to change your show frequency. Once you aren’t shackled to the tyranny of a weekly show, you’ll have time to make each episode better.

You can study shows that are ranked at the top of the iTunes chart to get started. And, don’t forget to study shows you like to listen to.

I started doing this a couple of weeks ago. I’ve only gotten through about eight shows, but I’ve already learned a lot. Not only that, I’ve come up with a lot of great ideas I can incorporate into my new show.

And, I can’t recommend the following advice enough:

“Good artists copy, great artists steal.” – somebody famous probably

This brings us to the end of this six-part series.

If you have a podcast or plan to launch one, here’s a simple plan for success:

  1. Figure out who you want to serve
  2. Figure out how you’ll serve them with your show
  3. Make an amazing show
