Improvisation is a great path to mindfulness

improvisation

Do you think you’re funny?

Yesterday, I talked about using photography as a fun way to practice mindfulness. And, today, I’ve got another fun mindfulness practice you can try: improvisation.

Yesterday, I had lunch with a talented content marketer and friend – Dan Sturdivant.

Dan’s a great guy and a digital marketing rock star. He has also studied improvisation – or improv – at the Dallas Comedy House.

If you are looking for a really effective way to become more mindful and more creative – while having a lot of fun – you ought to try improv.

As Dan mentioned yesterday, improv requires you to be fully in the moment. It’s perfect mindfulness training.

You can find improv classes and programs in many cities. I’ve been dying to try it, but my schedule makes that pretty difficult.

But, don’t follow my example. Say “yes” to improv and jump in with both feet.

The world could use more funny, creative people.

Going mobile – get out there and touch the world

going mobile

Get out of the house for a better life

Ever since I started getting out of the house, things have gotten a lot more interesting.

One way I can get more done while being out and about is by “going mobile”.

I mentioned this yesterday, but I often stop at coffee shops after work instead of heading straight home. I’ve started using a Chromebook laptop for these stops and it’s working out pretty well.

The Chromebook solution

The Chromebook is an inexpensive laptop that runs the Chrome browser as its operating system. Mine has 4 GB of RAM and it’s pretty fast.

Most of the work I need to do on the computer, I can do on the Chromebook. For example,  I can use Evernote on the web for writing.

However, there is some software I have loaded on my Mac that I can’t replace with websites and apps on the Chromebook. Luckily, I discovered the FREE Chrome Remote Desktop plugin.

This plugin lets me access my Mac remotely using the Chromebook.

And, if my Chromebook is lost, stolen, or destroyed, it’s not the end of the world. Nothing is saved locally on the laptop and it isn’t crazy expensive, like the Mac.

However, I do regret that I didn’t buy the 14-inch version.

This is the 14-inch version (affiliate link).

I really enjoy going out more each evening. I’m getting my other work done and I get to meet some interesting people and discover some interesting new places.

So, my simple advice for changing your life is, get out of the house.

Shake up your routine for better performance

Try caffeinating your performance

Are you stuck in a creative rut? Are you looking for a way to get motivated and get more done?

Recently, I realized it was time to work on my productivity and performance. So, I decided to shake things up and change up my daily routine.

Now, instead of going straight home from work, I’ll usually head to a coffee shop to do some writing or work on the podcast.

Maybe it’s the coffee, but I feel a lot more energized than if I did this at home.

And you never know who you might meet at a coffee shop.

My creative kit

I’m experimenting with the process. I recently bought an inexpensive Chromebook laptop (affiliate link) for these coffee shop excursions, so I’m leaving the MacBook Pro at home.

Every morning, I toss the Chromebook, some notebooks, and several gel pens into my canvas bag and head out the door.

This keeps things simple. The Chromebook runs for about ten hours when it’s fully charged, so I don’t have to worry about finding an outlet.

I can use the laptop to write show notes in WordPress for the podcast. If I want to do some writing or capture ideas, I can use Evernote in the browser. All the basic formatting I need for writing is right there. Easy.

Some days, I go analog and use one or two pens and one of the notebooks. I find it easier to do creative writing with pen and paper than a computer. And no electricity or wifi is required.

Bottom line, this simple change-up in my daily routine has helped me reset and re-engage with the creative process.

Why not try it and let me know if it works for you?
